Robert Allan Ltd. is Canada’s oldest privately owned consulting Naval Architectural firm, where engineering meets the open sea and is proudly established in Vancouver, BC.
For nearly a century, we’ve been designing vessels of almost every kind – from small fishing boats to ocean-going ferries. We’re best known for our expertise in tug and barge transportation, ship assist, and escort tugs, fast patrol craft, fireboats, and shallow-draft vessels.

The Role
As a Structural Designer, you’ll be a key member of our design teams, applying your structural design expertise to a diverse range or vessels, including tugs, commercial workboats, barges, and other steel and aluminum craft. You’ll collaborate with experienced Naval Architects, engineers, and designers to develop practical, efficient, and technically sound solutions for local and international clients. This role offers opportunity to take on challenging desk work and contribute to a high-performance team.
What You’ll Do
- Structural design drawings (AutoCAD 2D) and supporting calculations.
- 3D modeling of ship structures.
- Supporting the development of structure-related drawing templates & guidelines.
- Participation in various technical groups within the company.
- Mentoring junior technical staff.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in steel ship structural design & analysis of steel and/or aluminum vessels.
- In-depth familiarity with marine classification society rules and first principles calculations.
- Practical knowledge of welding, repairs, modifications, conversions.
- Able to work independently, manage priorities and apply sound judgment and decision-making to solve complex technical problems.
- High level of proficiency in AutoCAD and Excel.
- Experience in 3D modeling using Rhino, CADMATIC or other similar packages.
- Shipyard experience preferred.
- Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia an asset.
