Reports to: Manager, Naval Architecture
Location: Vancouver, BC OR St John’s, NL
Position Summary:
Robert Allan Ltd. is looking for a junior to intermediate-level naval architect to join our project teams designing ship-handling tugs, commercial workboats, barges, and other steel or aluminum craft for local and international clients from our Vancouver office. Working remotely will be considered from within Canada.
Duties & Anticipated Tasks:
- Design & analysis duties related to naval architectural design of a wide range of workboat vessel types
- Preparation of 2D drawings and 3D models
- Calculations related to stability, weight estimation, powering and propulsion and structural scantlings
- Supporting the development of structure-related drawing templates & guidelines
- Participation in various technical groups within the company
Skills:
- Diploma of Technology or bachelor’s degree in naval architecture
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in vessel arrangements, stability analysis, hull form design, weight estimating, powering & propulsion estimation, structural design, outfitting, safety systems design, etc.
- Familiarity with marine classification society rules and first principles calculations
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and apply sound judgment and decision-making to solve complex technical problems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Excel
- Interest & experience in 3D modeling using Rhino, CADMATIC or other similar design packages
- Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia an asset
Additional Requirements: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a valid Canadian work permit).
Salary: $65,000 – $85,000 CAD/year (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
